The thriving town of Innisfail is a flourishing, progressive community located in the heart of Central Alberta. It is home to a growing industrial sector and has strong connections to a flourishing agricultural economy. Innisfail offers amenities and memorable experiences for people of all ages ranging from quiet walking trails to state of the art library to high quality, accessible health services. The town is located along the busy QE2 Highway just 30 km south of Red Deer, 118 km north of Calgary and 173 km south of Edmonton.
Innisfail Community Economic Development
In the spring of 2021, the Town of embarked on a new path to fostering community prosperity – transitioning a municipal economic development program into a community economic development (CED) program.
InnisfailCED Executive Summary
The journey started when Town staff connected with national CED leaders through the Canadian Community Economic Development Network (CCEDnet) to seek advice on new approaches that could bring to life the aspirations of local residents.
Inspired by the possibilities and the opportunity to pursue an approach that integrates economic, social and environmental leadership, the Town contracted a CED social enterprise to provide expertise to a core team of local volunteer leaders, with diverse backgrounds and deep experience in the community. In the first phase, the CED leaders met monthly to learn about CED, share perspectives on local priorities, and outline a path forward.
The result of this first phase was the formal development of an advisory committee to oversee the development and implementation of a CED strategy. In the second phase, this CED Strategy and Tactical Plan were developed based on extensive background research, community engagement through resident and business surveys, strategic planning workshops with the Advisory Committee, and extensive consultation with Town Staff.
